HOW MUCH PROTIEN DO PERSONS W/HIV NEED?

A good rule of thumb is to eat one gram of protein for every two pounds of body weight—so if you weigh 160, 80 grams (around 3 ounces) of protein per day would be appropriate. But always tell your doctor all the things you add when you think about taking a supplement.

AIDS awareness origin

The Red Ribbon Project was created by the New York-based Visual AIDS Artists Caucus in 1991.:
  1. Remain anonymous as individuals and to credit the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus as a whole in the creation of the Red Ribbon Project, and not to list any individual as the creator of the Red Ribbon Project;
  2. Keep the image copyright free, so that no individual or organization would profit from the use of the red ribbon;
  3. The Red Ribbon should be used as a consciousness raising symbol, not as a commercial or trademark tool.
The artists who formed the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus wished to create a visual symbol to demonstrate compassion for people living with AIDS and their caregivers. Inspired by the yellow ribbons honoring American soldiers serving in the Gulf war, the color red was chosen for its, "connection to blood and the idea of passion -- not only anger, but love, like a valentine." First worn publicly byJeremy Irons at the 1991 Tony Awards,[2] the ribbon soon became renowned as an international symbol of AIDS awareness, becoming a politically correct fashion accessory on the lapels of celebrities. At the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert held at Wembley Stadium, London on Easter Sunday 1992, more than 100,000 red ribbons were distributed among the audience, with performers such as George Michael wearing one.[3][4] The Red Ribbon continues to be a powerful force in the fight to increase public awareness of HIV/AIDS and in the lobbying efforts to increase funding for AIDS services and research.
To symbolize the United States' commitment to combat the world AIDS epidemic, President George W. Bush's administration began displaying a 28-foot AIDS Ribbon on the White House's iconic North Portico on World AIDS Day 2007.[5][6] The display, now an annual tradition, quickly garnered attention, as it was the first banner, sign or symbol to prominently hang from the White House since Abraham Lincoln lived in the building.

Project will create HIV-prevention game for adolescents

Wednesday, October 03, 2012
UAB School of Nursing assistant professor Comfort Enah, Ph.D., has been awarded a three-year, $271,031 grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research for a project titled “Development of an HIV Prevention Game for African American Rural Adolescents.”
African Americans in the rural Deep South continue to experience a disproportionate increase in new HIV/AIDS infections, despite the availability of effective HIV prevention interventions. In particular, the number of new cases of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents is rapidly increasing in this region, and there are few interventions directed toward young adolescents, Enah notes.

The goal of Enah’s project is to develop a prototype for an individually tailored, electronic HIV prevention adventure game for African-American youths from 12 to 14 years old living in rural areas. The game will be designed to help this population improve decision-making and learn behavioral strategies that can assist them with avoiding sexual risk behaviors.   http://www.uab.edu/news/briefs/item/2796-project-will-create-hiv-prevention-game-for-adolescentsBy Jennifer Lollar REBLOGGED

Affordable Care Act Decision - NFIB v. Sebelius

Book Description

 June 30, 2012
This casebook contains the full text of the Supreme Court's historic decision in NFIB, v. Sebelius, 567 U.S. _____ (2012), decided June 28, 2012. The text of the syllabus, dissenting and concurring opinions are all included.

The Federal Government does not have the power to order people to buy health insurance. Section 5000A [of the Act] would therefore be unconstitutional if read as a command. The Federal Government does have the power to impose a tax on those without health insurance. Section 5000A is therefore constitutional, because it can reasonably be read as a tax.

HAS SUSTIVA DAMAGED MY BRAIN?

Since i started SUSTIVA ive had more cognitive behavioral problems plus tremors. I read years ago there was a risk of brain damage from use of this HIV medicine with some patients? Is this true? Well recently i read an article http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/250808.php  at MEDICAL NEWS TODAY from research project @Johns Hopkins a very good source of info.  The way the body metabolizes a commonly prescribed anti-retroviral drug that is used long term by patients infected with HIV may contribute to cognitive impairment by damaging nerve cells, a new Johns Hopkins research suggests.Nearly 50 percent of people infected with HIV will eventually develop some form of brain damage that, while mild, can affect the ability to drive, work or participate in many daily activities. It has long been assumed that the disease was causing the damage, but Hopkins researchers say the drug efavirenz may play a key role.  So its not just me that maybe feeling this way since I am a longterm survivor using this medication. Changes really started a few years back with moodiness, distrust, and some serious neurological issue. I have been tested for AIDS dementia & partly passed every other time. So now i know im not crazy and there is something real to my feelings. I hope this is not permanent! "But even with anti-retroviral treatments, people infected with HIV have shortened lifespans and the chance of cognitive decline is high. It's nothing you should treat lightly."  Should the  drug company be accountable for the damages? I say YES just like all companies are accountable for defective products that cause damages, because we HIV/AIDS survivors are not lab rats! Its time they realize this & take responsibility! Do you feel like a lab rat sometimes? Well i sure have over the years, we are not despensable objects that can be tested on and then say o well they are going to die anyways! So always ask questions? Educate! Empower yourselves! LIVE LONGER. FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

My Hot Pick of Book on HIV/AIDS!

My Dream to Trample AIDS: What everyone at any age should know about HIV/AIDS

Book Description

November 2, 2011
Don Carrel has been living with AIDS since 1995. He suspects he was infected with HIV in 1981. Thirty years later, less than 2 percent of people with HIV have lived long enough to share their stories. In 1995, while lying in a hospital bed with Pneumocystis pneumonia, the most common form of death for someone with AIDS, Don had a riveting dream that dramatically altered his life and, perhaps the future lives of more than 100,000 teenagers. After making a full recovery, Don set out to teach young people what they needed to know about HIV prevention so that they wouldn't wind up in his shoes. His lofty goal: to stomp out AIDS. After 16 years, Don has collected thousands of thank-you letters from teens and adults who have heard his compelling presentations. Today, Don hopes to reach an even wider audience with his book, My Dream to Trample AIDS.

Partners in crime: T Follicular Helper Cells assist HIV in thwarting the immune system

Antibodies play an essential role in protecting against viral infection by preventing viral entry into host cells and eliminating cells infected with virus. A few viruses, including HIV and SIV, have developed mechanisms to evade the body's antibody response, allowing the virus to persist and making it very difficult to develop effective vaccines.
In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, two research groups report that accumulation of a type of immune cell known as T follicular helper (TFH) cells accumulate during HIV and SIV infection to help the viruses escape antibody-mediated immune responses.
Hendrick Streeck and his colleagues at Harvard Medical School found that there was significant increase in the number of TFH cells in patients with chronic HIV infections. The extra TFH cells were associated with alterations in the development of B cells, which are responsible for antibody production in response to viral infections.
Constantinos Petrovas's group at NIH discovered that the gene profile of TFH cells in SIV-infected rhesus macaques, demonstrating that TFH cells are highly susceptible to SIV infection.
In a companion piece, Carola Vinuesa of the Australian National University in Canberra, AU discusses the implications of these findings for the development of new HIV therapies.
TITLE: Expansion of HIV-specific T follicular helper cells in chronic HIV infection

I Do Declare! Persons living with #HIV not eating Healthy in America!

How can we make people living with HIV/AIDS pick between eating healthy & paying for medicines,co-pays, treatments? I learned a long time ago people with HIV/AIDS have to put back almost 3 times the amount of nutrients in high quality to survive. HIV deplete's nutrients at a weird rate! Many get sick from malnutrition on top of side effects of meds, stress & worrying "How will i afford meds this month & eat healthy?" Do you see the trend here? People with this chronic illness need to eat right in a time when everyone else is worrying about obesity. The department of food stamps will not help. They will only give the minimum amount not even worth bothering with if  your disabled on fixed income. While corruption runs ram pit in this Department of Human Resources people go under fed like a 3rd world country. So do we eat healthy or stay adherent on our HIV meds? Not everyone living with HIV/AIDS are rich and not all look like models they pick to give false representation on magazines covers making the public think if they have HIV/AIDS & look like that why should i be afraid of catching it,  they got meds for it now so i am not scared of having risk behaviors & catching HIV! That is giving the public only a 50% truth of what happens when you test HIV POSITIVE. I as a 30 year survivor have seen this thought process grow into "WHY FEAR HIV?" They got meds for it now! Some in the public agree with me on this. I have asked a few. So what do you think?

TRUCKCHASERS

My names ''Joe" I was born and raised in Alabama in backwoods small town. I am 50 yrs old now with plenty mileage under my belt. I have blond & grey hair now with piercing blue eyes I wear stache & goatee with sideburns for my disguise to look straight even though I'm bisexual & i date women. i grew up around uncles who like to play with kids if you know what i mean "wink" so since I've gotten older i haven't lost my taste in rugged married men or straight acting cross country truck drivers.  They call my type "truck chasers" men who like to service male truckers at rest areas, truck stops and all night dinners usually on an exit off the highways & byways! I know its 2012 but i love the feeling of busting one with hot masculine men who probably got a long haul across country & needing relief in the form i offer "hint HINT" smiling to myself cause many hot memories passing from over the years give me a rush! I don't care?
TRUCK CHASERS; give bj's,anal taking or giving, & allots more some will wear women's clothes to help the hot truckers out! Because we are service providers just like most hospitality services. I have had some really hot daddies over the years. A few were regulars. Some would bring me thank you gifts as though i was their wives helping them out on those lonely over road trips... Over the years things have changed some cause of the Internet, they set up meets with you on sex sites at truck stops they will be near, that maybe near you they are eager cause the tension is built up & they wanna bust several with several men. transsexuals women working the places they frequent. I love the feeling of anticipating some new strange meat that i can conquer it give me rushes like doing poppers! They love natural if you know what i mean? Not using a rubber is the best feeling being in a truck bent over having hot unsafe sex reminds me of the 80's not having a care just getting some hot sex with nameless strangers several times a night.

SAY IT & DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT , LOTS OF LIP SERVICE!

Pres. Bill Clinton:

The next biggest problem we have with AIDS is in the American South, where I'm sad to say since it's my home region, there's still too much stigma. Stigma against men who have sex with men, against sex workers, against people who are drug users, where this is not treated enough like a public health problem.

And that, plus the poverty, plus the disproportionately high percentage of people in our country, in the South, who live in rural areas and therefore have some of the same access problems that people in Africa and Southeast Asia and other places, have created a big problem for us.

-- President Bill Clinton addressing the closing plenary session of the 2012 International AIDS Conference in Washington, DC                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   ALL THE MONEY IN THE SOUTH FOR HIV AIDS SERVICES GOES INTO SOMEONES POCKETS, INSTEAD OF HELPING POOR IN SOUTHERN RURAL TOWNS ..I MOVED TO ATLANTA,GA AWAY FROM FAMILY BECAUSE I COULDN'T GET CARE FOR ME A 30 YR AIDS SURVIVOR & I WOULD LOVE TO LIVE CLOSER TO THEM BUT IF I DID I WOULD LOSE CRITICAL SERVICES A LONGTERM SURVIVOR NEEDS. MANY DOCTORS DISCRIMINATE IN THE NORTHERN, NORTHEASTERN, SOUTHEASTERN PARTS OF ALABAMA,MISSISSIPPI,LOUISIANA,TENNESSEE, AND MANY MORE AREAS. PEOPLE HAVE TO DRIVES 100'S OF MILES TO GET SUBPAR CARE IN THESE AREAS OR BE SUBJECTED TO 3RD WORLD MOBILE SATELITE CLINICS WHILE BIG CITIES GET ALL SERVICES THEY NEED & ABUSE THE SYSTEM. WHEN YOU GOING TO GET OF YOUR ARSES & CHANGE THIS AMERICA ? STOP SENDING ALL THE MONEY OVERSEAS HELP YOUR OWN FOR A CHANGE & DO MORE OVERSIGHT WITH THE CROOKED PEOPLE IN AIDS SERVICES STEALING AND OVER PAYING THEMSELVES INSTEAD OF PUTTING FUNDS INTO SERVICES! LET OUR PEOPLE HAVE SOME DIGNITY THEIR LAST FEW YEARS ON THIS EARTH!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHERE HAS THE SERVICES GONE IN RURAL SOUTHERN USA?

I was born and raised in Alabama. I get to visit over their from Atlanta,Ga couple times a year. When their i observe how people still struggle for medical care period not to mention specialized #HIV care you have to drive 100 miles to receive an that is sub-par by inner city standards! They seem more worried about roads in Alabama Mississippi Tennessee Louisiana and North panhandle of Florida! When did the quality of life become second or third to a road? I think its the country Good ole Boys way of thinking #HIV #AIDS is a gay disease when it is becoming more epidemic of Women now! Guess it has to be one of their family members before they provide funding for programs for HIV AIDS Services. I say this is outrage against human rights in America to have equal quality care as all do in inner cities and northern states. Americans have to decide do we eat or pay for medicine? This is a travesty that the government fat boys are doing this to our country! Does it not piss you off? Well it needs to change & we the people have to force this change! Tell them lets not fix this bumpy road this year lets help someone get medical services and social service living with HIV AIDS! OK  Just keep TWEETING on TWITTER until they hear us!

A WORD FROM ME A POZ PERSON!

You can't catch #HIV by saying the #WORD ! But you can if you practice #RISKY behaviors!

Talking about HIV can be hard.

When you find out you have HIV, it is very important to find people who will support and encourage you. Your healthcare provider (usually a doctor or nurse practitioner), partner, husband or wife, parents, brothers, sisters, children, and friends are all good choices. But reaching out to others can be hard. You may feel angry, ashamed, or afraid. You may be unsure if you should tell other people. Or maybe you want to tell them, but you don’t know how.                                                                                                                               Having a support system is very important. It can help you have a positive outlook and lead a healthier life with HIV. Patients who have the support of family and friends may be healthier longer than those who do not.

A Bachelor of Arts Degree in HIV-AIDS: A self-Educational Guide

A Bachelor of Arts Degree in HIV-AIDS is a complete guide for people living with HIV-AIDS. This Self-Educational Guide is the easy way to learn and get all of the facts about HIV-AIDS from A-Z. under one cover. Today, People are living longer, healthier HIV-positive lives because of the progress done in research and the many Antiretroviral medications that are now available and approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). There is a small group of HIV patients who develop AIDS very slowly, or never at all. This book was written so that, you too, may be one of them. This book tells you everything you need to know from prevention to cure.
Whether HIV-AIDS has been around for 30 years or 100 years, the reality is that it is still a threat, now more than ever, and it appears not to be going away for some time to come. Approximately 5,000,000 people are affected Worldwide with HIV of which 1,200,000 are Americans. HIV is not the only incurable, terminal disease out there because Hepatitis C has joined it's rank, and it is estimated that 1-9 African American males between the ages of 40-49 are infected with Hepatitis C which can be transmitted by oral, anal, or vaginal sex. This disease can be treated with medications for a long period, but eventually, it kills by cirrhosis of the liver, kidney failure, or Pancreatic cancer. Both of these terminal diseases are discussed in this Guide, extensively, because, ultimately, anyone who has tested positive for HIV, and who has, also, contracted Hepatitis C is, immediately, diagnosed with Full-Blown AIDS. You are Greater than AIDS because it is preventable.

SOUTHERN & FINDING OUT IM #HIV

IF YOU ARE DIAGNOSED WITH HIV?  IT CAN FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE LOST A FRIEND OR A FAMILY MEMBER!  WHEN I WAS DIAGNOSED 30 YEARS AGO I REMEMBER CRYING & MY HEART HURT SO BAD! I FELT I HAD LOST EVERYTHING; LIFE,LOVE,HAPPINESS,BODY & SOUL .. I WAS LUCKY I HAD A LADY WITH ME THAT LET ME CRY ALL DAY ON AND OFF UNTIL I SLOWED DOWN BUT MY HEART HURT FELT BROKEN LIKE I HAD HAD A HEART ATTACK!  WHEN WE ARE DIAGNOSED WITH ANY LIFE CHANGING DISEASE WE ALWAYS FEEL A LOSS. I WAS SO LUCKY I HAD JUST GOTTEN SOBER  & CLEAN! BUT MOST ARE NOT AT THIS STAGE WHEN THEY FIND OUT THEIR HIV STATUS . SOME ARE NOT THINKING WITH COPING SKILLS , ITS MORE LIKE THEY THINK THEY ARE THINKING HOW CAN I NUMB THE PAIN OR FORGET THIS TRAUMATIC EVENT WITH GETTING DRUNK OR HIGH! BUT ONCE YOU GET PAST THIS YOU SEE YOUR STILL HERE & STILL HIV. SO YOU ASK WHAT DO I DO NOW? WHICH DIRECTION DO I GO WITH MY LIFE DO I JUST GO AHEAD AND DIE OR SHOULD I LIVE AND FIGHT? HOW ARE PEOPLE GOING TO TREAT ME? CAN PEOPLE TELL I HAVE HIV? DO I TELL MY FAMILY? MY PARTNER IF I HAVE ONE? AM I A FILTHY PERSON? HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO LIVE? I STILL HAVE TO WORK! WILL THE MEDS WORK FOR ME? WILL THEY MAKE ME SICK? WILL I BE LOVED EVER AGAIN? NO ONE WILL WANT ME! WILL I BE ABLE TO HAVE CHILDREN? ……                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             WELL IT CAN HURT A ALLOTS! WHEN I HAD GOTTEN PAST MY FIRST STAGE OF NEWLY DIAGNOSES , I ASKED WHAT NOW? WELL FOR ME I WENT THROUGH UPS & DOWNS UPS & DOWNS OF MORNING LOSS LIKE I HAD LOST MY BEST FRIEND! THAT LASTED 6 MONTHS THEN I JUST WOKE UP LIKE IT WAS BRIGHT AND SUNNY ONE DAY! I THOUGHT TO MYSELF WHAT DO I DO NOW? ONE THOUGHT CAME TO MY MIND I HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING I WANTED TO DO! BUT SOBER & CLEAN…DO YOU KNOW THE "SAYING STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES" CAME TO MIND. I STARTED SEEING THE WORLD IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT. THE SUN WAS BEAUTIFUL, THE SKY WAS BLUE THAN I REMEMBERED, SUNRISES I THOUGHT WERE SHOWING OFF JUST FOR ME! GREEN LEAVES SEEMED GREENER! WOW, HAD THEY ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THIS? BUT REMEMBER I WAS REALISTIC TO BEING NEW IN RECOVERY. HAD TO KEEP FROM SETTING ON A WOBBLY PEDESTAL & NOT FALLING BACK INTO DRUGS & ALC USE AGAIN. NOT TO SAY I TRIPPED LIKE 2 TIMES BUT THEN I'M LIKE I GOTTA LOVE THIS BODY OF MINE! I HAVE TO NOT MAKE HIV MAD. BECAUSE I FELT IT WAS A BEING LIVING IN ME COHABITATION, SO WE HAD TO GET ALONG IF I DID ANYTHING “HIV” WOULD GET UPSET THEN I WOULD PAY FOR IT BY GETTING SICK…………                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        GRATITUDE, BECAME A HUGE WORD IN MY VOCABULARY. FIRST I HAD TO ASK MYSELF WHAT AM I GRATEFUL FOR? HERE I AM AN ADDICT IN RECOVERY, I HAVE THE TERRIBLE “BUG” “HIV” BIG QUESTION WHAT NOW?        THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF MY STORY I WILL GO BACK & FORTH BECAUSE MY MEMORY ISN’T LIKE IT USE TO BE, HOPE YOU STICK WITH MY ON THIS JOURNEY. ASK ME QUESTIONS I AM HERE TO PASS ON HOPE FOR ALL OF YOU NEW OR OLD TIME POZ PEEPS!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             TOM THE POZ  LONG-TERM SURVIVOR.                         " IT'S NOT OVER "
